Diary

Monday, 10 October 1960 - In accordance with the World Cup regulations in which 22 men maybe nominated, the England International Selection Committee, now headed by Joe Richards, have named a starting eleven, the same as which started the match against Northern Ireland on Saturday, and an eleven-man reserve team. Because no substitutes are allowed in World Cup qualification matches, only three of the reserve team—a goalkeeper, a defender and a forward—will travel to Luxembourg.
The decision to choose the team today came as something of a surprise, as it was not expected until Thursday.
"Under World Cup rules we had to send 22 names to FIFA ten days before the game. The news would have probably leaked out in any case, so we decided to release it straight away" explained manager Walter Winterbottom.
Tony Macedo, who is not qualified for the home internationals, is still regarded as the next best goalkeeper to Springett.
It is a sad reflection on the dearth of top-class outside-lefts in English football at the moment, that not one of the four wingers named have played regularly on the left for their clubs.
Full backs John Angus and Don Megson, and forwards Peter Brabrook, Joe Baker and John Connelly are also named in the FA XI to meet the Army at Hillsborough on the same night the Senior side face Luxembourg.

Tuesday, 11 October 1960 - Fulham's Gibraltan goalkeeper, Tony Macedo, has been admitted into hospital for a carbuncle. He loses his place in the party to Sheffield United's Alan Hodgkinson, who also takes his place as travelling reserve, along with Brian Miller and Peter Dobing.

Monday, 17 October 1960 - The England team fly off to Luxembourg.
In his panic to leave his home, Jimmy Greaves forgot his passport. A taxi had to rush it to FA Headquarters to allow him to make the trip. The gas oven in his Hornchurch home had blown up. The oven door hurtled across the room and just missed his two-year-old daughter, Lynn.
Luxembourg think so little of their chances that they pleaded with the Football Association to play the first-leg in Luxembourg. They feared that they would be beaten so badly at Wembley that no-one would want to watch the return match.

Tuesday, 18 October 1960 - The England team practised on the Municipal Stadium pitch today, as it rained for the first time in ten days in the Grand Duchy. But the pitch remained firm and grassy.
