All information is complete to and including England's last match, the sixth of the 1960-61 season, against Mexico on 10 May April 1961.

Diary

Sunday, 16 April 1961 - Sunderland captain and right half Stan Anderson is the shock name in England's nineteen-man party to face Mexico, and to then tour Portugal, Italy and Austria next month. Anderson is the only player in England footballing history ever to be sent off in an international match. The surprise omission, however, is big Maurice Norman, the centre-half who has produced so many England-class displays for Tottenham Hotspur this season. He is out because of the dual ability of Burnley's Brian Miller to cover at left and centre-half. Crystal Palace leader Johnny Byrne was having treatment at Selhurst Park today for a strained knee when he heard that he could be the first ever Fourth Division player to represent his country. Arsenal's George Eastham has been included, after being overlooked by the Football League selectors, and Gerry Hitchens; Aston Villa leader, has been brought in as cover for Bobby Smith.
"Unless there are any last-minute changes through injuries or a possible Cup Final replay, we hope to keep the team that beat Scotland for the game against Mexico," confirmed Team Manager Walter Winterbottom.

Monday, 1 May 1961 - Jimmy Greaves, Chelsea and England's inside-right, has been suspended, starting today, for fourteen days, after failing to go on his club's short tour of Israel. It could mean he also misses England's match with Young England and the international with Mexico next week, as those under club suspension will not be considered for representative matches, although it is still for the Football Association to decide, as the suspension was decided after the selection. Greaves is in Italy watching Milan lose 3-1 to Bari. He will join Milan if the Italian FA lift their embargo on foreign players.

Tuesday, 2 May 1961 - Joe Richards, chairman of the FA selectors, has confirmed that Jimmy Greaves will not be available for England selection. It seems possible that either Crystal Palace's Johnny Byrne can be moved up from the Young England side, but he is suffering with a septic groin injury. Another alternative would be Arsenals' George Eastham.

Friday, 5 May 1961 - England 1 Young England 1 - England were held to a draw by their young counterparts at Stamford Bridge. Right-back Jimmy Armfield was hurt in the second half and had to be helped off. England began where they left off in that 9—3 shattering of Scotland were a goal ahead after four minutes. Aston Villa centre forward Gerry Hitchens made the goal with a darting run down the left. He pulled the ball back for Bobby Charlton, whose passed was clipped on by Bryan Douglas to Johnny Haynes. And the England captain gave his clubmate Tony Macedo no chance with a shot from the edge of the area. In the twenty-first minute, Burnley's Robson headed an equaliser from a good cross by Alan Kirkham. In the thirty-sixth minute Arsenal's George Eastham, deputising for Jimmy Greaves, had a shot scrambled from the line. Then a Haynes lob was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Macedo. After seventy-three minutes Jimmy Armfield was helped off with an ankle injury after he fell to the ground with opposing left back Ashurst.

Sunday, 7 May 1961 - Derek Kevan, the West Bromwich forward, who last played for England in the team that beat the United States two years ago, is named as the replacement for Jimmy Greaves in the England team to play Mexico on Wednesday. He learned of his selection from a policeman, who called at his parents home in Ripon, Yorkshire. Confirming his selection, Winterbottom said "Derek is in top form again and has played with most of the present England team before. He is an experienced player and will have the confidence to play at Wembley—it won't be something new to him." He will not, however, be joining the party for the tour.
Jimmy Armfield, who damaged his right ankle on Friday, is fit to continue as right back.

Monday, 8 May 1961 - The party arrives at The Bank of England Ground in Priory Lane, Roehampton. However, before joining up, Tottenham's Bobby Smith paid a special, early morning visit to the Spurs ground for treatment on his right knee. He survived the FA Cup Final without a knock, but an old trouble has recurred and the knee swelled during the night. Neither is he in any pain, but the knee is stiff, making it difficult to move his right leg. "Another 24 hours will tell us whether or not he will be able to play Mexico," Winterbottom acknowledged. "He will have further treatment and we will have to see how he responds to it before we can make a final decision."
Gerry Hitchens, who dropped out of Aston Villa's tour of Russia so that he could remain with the England party, may now get a shock reward. He played in place of Smith in the twenty-minute each way training match against an F.A. Far Eastern XI, winning 4-2 (Kevan, Charlton, Robson and Hitchens scoring for England, Fantham and Finney for the side due to leave for Malaysia on Friday).
Derek Kevan arrived on time from Ripon, despite having to divert to West Bromwich to collect his boots.

Tuesday, 9 May 1961 - Bobby Smith is ruled out of the match with Mexico after visiting his club's trainer, Cecil Poynton. Smith turned up to England's final training session today and told manager Walter Winterbottom: "I have been advised not to play—by the man who has given me knee injections before each of my last seven games. I could have played tomorrow at a pinch, but thought it better not too. I had some manipulation on my right knee today but there is still some puffiness at the back of it. I shall be fit to tour with England."
Aston Villa leader Gerry Hitchens was immediately called up to replace Smith. During training, he was presented with his Midlands' Footballer of the Year trophy. "I am thrilled," he said. "This is the greatest day of my life."
Jimmy Greaves was also present at training and even posed for team pictures. But took no part in the work-out.
Both Hitchens and Kevan scored in the 3—0 win for the England team when they wound up their practice yesterday against an FA XI. Bobby Charlton scored the other. John Angus took the place of Mick McNeil, who was resting his knee.
