Description

White short-sleeved shirt with crew neck. Embroidered emblem on left breast and red number on back in standard Umbro font. White shorts and white socks.
Variations
  • On the right hip of the shirts worn in the 1970 World Cup there was an ink stamp of the SPORTSWEAR by UMBRO THE CHOICE OF CHAMPIONS logo in navy blue.
  • In the last two matches in which this shirt was worn (after the 1970 World Cup), England wore a font with a slight typographical difference, in that the number one reverted to a simple rectangular bar, as it was on the long-sleeved white shirt.
  • Against Colombia, USSR and Yugoslavia, England wore the blue home shorts that were replaced by white Aertex shorts for the other three games.
Most Appearances 5 - Bobby Moore, Martin Peters
4 - Alan Ball, Sir Bobby Charlton, Terry Cooper, Sir Geoff Hurst, Brian Labone, Francis Lee, Alan Mullery
  • Moore and Peters were the only players still in the squad in 1973, when England wore Aertex again, for the first time in three years, but Peters was substituted, leaving Moore as the only player to complete five games in the shirt.
  • In the first two games in which this shirt was worn, England wore pre-World Cup tour squad numbers. Even though the team that started the World Cup was numbered 1-11, the same outfield players were numbered 19-28 against Colombia and Ecuador.
  • No players made their international debut in this shirt, but four players won their last cap, with Tommy Wright making his eleventh and last appearance, against Brazil, as a replacement for the injured Keith Newton.
Scorers

2 - Martin Peters
1 - Alan Ball, Mick Channon,Sir Bobby Charlton, Martin Chivers, Sir Geoff Hurst, Kevin Keegan, Brian Kidd, Francis Lee, own goal

  • Brian Kidd was the only player to score his first international goal in this shirt, but it was also his last, and on his last appearance, as he did not make the final squad for Mexico.
  • Sir Bobby Charlton scored his record 49th and last goal for England, against Colombia.
  • Sir Geoff Hurst opened England's account in the World Cup, having scored the last two goals of England's last campaign, in 1966.
  • Kevin Keegan scored England's last goal of Joe Mercer's brief spell as caretaker-manager.
Captains

5 - Bobby Moore
1 - Emlyn Hughes

  • Moore was unable to lift the Jules Rimet Trophy for a second time, in Mexico, but his performance against Brazil was one of the highlights of the tournament, culminating in the iconic photograph of him swapping his shirt with the great Pelé at the end of the game.
  • Hughes captained England in Joe Mercer's last game as caretaker-manager.

England designated all white as their kit for the World Cup 1970 final tournament. They wore this special lightweight summer shirt in the two South American World Cup warm-up matches against Colombia and Ecuador, and in the first two World Cup group matches against Romania and Brazil.

The shirt and shorts were made out of the same Aertex material that England had worn on the previous trip to Mexico, in 1969, but this time, it was in short sleeves. In the two summers following the 1970 World Cup, England did not make any trips to warmer climes, but in 1973 and 1974, they, once again, donned the Aertex on their end-of-season tours, though these only amounted to one game on each tour when they wore the white shirt. The shirt and shorts were made out of the same Aertex material that England had worn on the previous trip to Mexico, in 1969, but this time, it was in short sleeves. The first shirt on the left above was issued to Sir Geoff Hurst in 1970, whilst the second (the number ten shirt and emblem) was worn by Colin Bell against Yugoslavia in 1974, the last Umbro shirt worn by England for ten years. Both shirts appear here by kind permission of the Neville Evans National Football Shirt Collection (curator Simon Shakeshaft).
