The 73 Pre-1914 Braces Scored by England

1 1872-73

8 March 1873, 4-2 vs. Scotland,, Surrey Cricket Ground, Kennington
25 year-old debutant William Kenyon-Slaney is the first player to score a goal for England and he did so within the first two minutes, charging the ball into the net. After an hours' play, Kenyon-Slaney again charged the ball into the net and became the first player to score twice (a brace) and to put the host country back in front.


2 1878-79

5 April 1879, 5-4 vs. Scotland, Surrey Cricket Ground, Kennington
20 year-old debutant Charlie Bambridge is the second player to score two goals in a match for England, at the same venue as, and six years after, the first. Both goals came from 'fine kicks' and scored in the second half, 35 minutes apart.


3 & 4 1879-80

13 March 1880, 4-5 vs. Scotland, Hampden Park, Glasgow
In the first defeat to include an England brace, 21 year-old Charlie Bambridge scores with a 'clever low shot' and a 'parting-kick' at the end of each half. He also becomes the first player to score two goals in a match for England on two separate occasions.

15 March 1880, 3-2 vs. Wales, The Racecourse, Wrexham
24 year-old captain Francis Sparks scores two in his third and final England appearance. Both goals came in twelve second half minutes, the quickest so far. The first captain to score a brace.


5-7 1881-82

(3) 18 February 1882, 13-0 vs. Ireland, Knock Road, Belfast
Because the timings of the goals in this match are not available, then it is not possible to decide in which order the braces were scored.
21 year-old debutant
Howard Vaughton could be the first, scoring his first after three minutes, he went on to score five goals in total.
19 year-old debutant Jimmy Brown scored a second goal after first scoring in the eighth minute.
23 year-old, also debutant,
Arthur Brown also scored a hat-trick in the same match, scoring his first in the fifteenth minute, ending with four goals in total. In either case, their third goals came in an unknown order and in unknown times.


8-11 1882-83

3 February 1883, 5-0 vs. Wales, Surrey Cricket Ground, Kennington
20 year-old Clem Mitchell scored his first goal came in the 16th minute, and his second twenty minutes from time, before completing his hat-trick sixteen minutes later.
(3) 24 February 1883, 7-0 vs. Ireland, Liverpool Cricket Ground, Aigburth
For the second time, three players score at least two goals in each in a single match.
20 year-old debutant
Nevill Cobbold scored his two goals in three first half minutes (17 & 19), the second was England's fiftieth goal scored

Olly Whateley began England's rout in the fifteenth minute before completing his brace a minute into the second half.

Arthur Dunn scored two goals in each half, scoring his second ten minutes from time.


12-14 1883-84

(2) 23 February 1884, 8-1 vs. Ireland, Ulster Cricket Ground, Belfast
24 year-old Harry Cursham is the scorer of England's first competitive brace, his goal times for his first two goals are unknown, but they were both the last two goals of the first half, before going onto to complete his-hatrick in the second half.
Followed by 25 year-old
Charlie Bambridge scores the first of the brace in the 18th minute and his second early in the second half, before going on to score the first hat-trick in a competitive match.
17 March 1884, 4-0 vs. Wales, The Racecourse, Wrexham
The 22 year-old Od Etonian
William Bromley-Davenport playing his the last of his two England appearances scored his only two goals in the same match 78 minutes apart, seven minutes after the start and five minutes from the end.


15 1885-86

13 March 1886, 6-1 vs. Ireland, Ulster Cricket Ground, Belfast
21 year-old Ben Spilsbury scored his first goal, the equaliser, after the 20th minute, and his second came soon after. He went on to score four goals, his next two both came at some point during the second half.


16-19 1886-87

(3) 5 February 1887, 7-0 vs. Ireland, Bramall Lane, Sheffield
For the third time, three players score at least two goals in each in a single match.
21 year-old
Tinsley Lindley scored his first in the 26th minute, and his second nineteen minutes later. He would go on to complete a hat-trick two minutes into the second half.
a day after his 24th birthday, Nevill Cobbold scored his two goals in each half, after 23 minutes and after 46 minutes. His second goal is England's fiftieth second half goal scored. It is also Cobbold's second brace.

Fred Dewhurst actually opened the scoring three minutes in and then ended the scoring a minute from time.
26 February 1887, 4-0 vs. Wales, Surrey Cricket Ground, Kennington
Tinsley Lindley scored his first in the 55th minute, and his second ten minutes from the end, which was both the 25th goal scored against Wales, and the 25th goal scored at home in the second half. Lindley is the third player to score two braces, but the first to do so in the same season.


20-22 1887-88

4 February 1888, 5-1 vs. Wales, Alexandra Recreation Ground, Crewe
24 year-old Fred Dewhurst scores England's first two goals on his sixth appearance, the first, England's fiftieth away goal, coming in the 16th minute, the second coming after seventy minutes to become the fourth player to score two braces, before going on to complete his hat-trick.
17 March 1888, 5-0 vs. Scotland, Hampden Park, Glasgow
Preston North End's centre-forward Fred Dewhurst scores twice again, on his seventh appearance, the first, a fortieth minute header, the second coming nine minutes later, to become the third player to score three braces.
7 April 1888, 5-1 vs. Ireland, Ulster Cricket Ground,
Belfast
On his 21st birthday, debutant Albert Allen scores three goals, his first in the 14th minute, and his hat-trick was complete on the hour.


23 1888-89

2 March 1889, 6-1 vs. Ireland, Anfield Road, Liverpool
28 year-old debutant Jack Yates scored twice in his only appearance to become the oldest to do so, so far. The first was a 22nd minute overhead kick, and the second before the end of the first half. Yates would complete his hat-trick in the second half.


24-26 1889-90

 (2) 15 March 1890, 9-1 vs. Ireland, Ulster Cricket Ground, Belfast
22 year-old debutant Fred Geary certainly scored two goals, probably three, maybe up to five. By the wonders of mathematics, then at least one out of Joe Lofthouse, Nat Walton, Kenny Davenport or Bill Townley must have also scored twice, but which one?. It's a mess.... move on. We don't really know who scored the nine goals, even less so the timings

15 March 1890, 3-1 vs. Wales, The Racecourse, Wrexham
At the same time in North Wales, 21 year-old debutant
Edmund Currey equalised and then put England ahead, both in the second half.


27 1890-91

7 March 1891, 6-1 vs. Ireland, Molineux, Wolverhampton
25 year-old captain Tinsley Lindley scored twice for a third time in his final appearance. The first was scored on the hour, and his second, cementing his status as England's top goalscorer, came seven minutes from the end, which was also England's fiftieth competitive away goal. The second captain to score a brace, the first to do so competitively.


28&29 1891-92

5 March 1892, 2-0 vs. Ireland, Cliftonville Gardens, Belfast
25 year-old Harry Daft scored twice in his final appearance. The first was headed in a minute before the end of the first half, the second came two minutes into the second half. It is the first time that the brace has been responsible for the victory.
2 April 1892, 4-1 vs. Scotland, Ibrox Park, Glasgow
28 year-old Jack Goodall became the oldest player so far to score a brace on his seventh appearance. They came in seven first half minutes, in the fourteenth and 21st.


30-32 1892-93

25 February 1893, 6-1 vs. Ireland, Wellington Road Football Ground, Handsworth
23 year-old debutant Walter Gilliat scored his first after eight minutes, and his second ten minutes later, before completing his hat-trick before the end of the first half.
13 March 1893, 6-0 vs. Wales, Victoria Ground, Stoke-upon-Trent
23 year-old debutant Fred Spiksley scored the first after 25 minutes, and followed with a second five minutes later. He completed his hattrick two minutes from the end.
1 April 1893, 5-2 vs. Scotland, Athletic Ground, Richmond
Fred Spiksley is the fifth player to score two braces for England. A volley and a header in three minutes (78th & 80th)

33 1893-94

12 March 1894, 5-1 vs. Wales, The Racecourse, Wrexham
24 year-old debutant John Veitch scored in the thirtieth minute and the second in the 55th minute, before going on to score his hat-trick

For the fourth time, three players score at least two goals in each in a single match.

Steve Bloomer scored his first in the fourth minute, and his second in the 58th minute.

Frank Becton also scored his two goals in each half, the first, after fourteen minutes and his second came on the hour.
31 year-old
Jack Goodall breaks his own record as the oldest player to score two goals in a single match after scoring his second brace for England. They were the last two goals of the match, after 65 and 87 minutes.


37&38 1895-96

(2) 16 March 1896, 9-1 vs. Wales, Cardiff Arms Park, Cardiff
22 year-old Steve Bloomer on his fourth appearance, scored his first after 25 minutes and collected his brace fifteen minutes later. He will go on to become the second England player to score five goals.

Gilbert Smith scored a second brace. He had scored before Bloomer in the fifteenth minute, and then scored his second two minutes before half-time.


39-41 1896-97

(2) 20 February 1897, 6-0 vs. Ireland, Trent Bridge Cricket Ground, Nottingham
27 year-old debutant Fred Wheldon scores the first, a free-kick, after 27 minutes, and sent in his next three minutes later. He would go on to complete his hat-trick in the 55th minute

23 year-old Steve Bloomer on his fifth appearance, scored the first and sixth goals in the match. His record-equalling third brace began in the seventeenth and ended five minutes from time.
29 March 1897, 4-0 vs. Wales, Bramall Lane, Sheffield

Alf Milward scored the only two goals of the second half, in three minutes between the 62nd and 64th minutes.


42&43 1897-98

28 March 1898, 3-0 vs. Wales, The Racecourse, Wrexham
28 year-old Fred Wheldon scored England's first two goals in the match, the first coming in the ninth, the second thirty minutes into the second half. WHeldon's second brace

2 April 1898, 3-1 vs. Scotland, Celtic Park, Glasgow
24 year-old Steve Bloomer on his eighth appearance, scored the final two England goals in this match, in the 23rd and seventieth minutes. It is his record-breaking fourth England brace which also put him on top of the England goalscoring chart.


44-48 1898-99

(4) 18 February 1899, 13-2 vs. Ireland, Roker Park, Sunderland
For the first time, four players score at least two goals in each in a single match, all scoring their second in the second half.

Fred Forman, after having scored after 21 minutes, was first to complete his double, seven minutes into the second half.

Jimmy Settle was the only one of the four players who scored all of his goals in the second half. First, a shot in the 53rd minute, and a second two minutes later. He will go on to complete a hattrick ten minutes from time.
26 year-old captain
Gilbert Smith, making his fourteenth appearance, scored his first after 32 minutes, and a second in the 55th minute. Completing a hattrick five minute laters. He then added a fourth three minutes after that. The third captain to score a brace.
25 year-old top goalscorer
Steve Bloomer, already a record-holder, did not want to miss out, and after scoring in the fortieth minute, scored England's final goal in the afternoon a minute from time, thus securing his fifth brace for his country.
20 March 1899, 4-0 vs. Wales, Athletic Ground, Bedminster
Steve Bloomer, still a holder of multiple records, scored in at the end of each half, thus securing his sixth brace for his country, also in the third consecutive match. The last brace scored in the nineteenth century.


49 1900-01

18 March 1901, 6-0 vs. Wales, St. James' Park, Newcastle upon Tyne
27 year-old top goalscorer Steve Bloomer, now making his thirteenth appearance. He scored his first goal, a fast, high, shot, after 38 minutes, and added another on the hour mark. He will go no to score four goals after scoring his seventh brace.


50 1902-03

14 February 1903, 4-0 vs. Ireland, Molineux, Wolverhampton
23 year-old debutant Vivian Woodward scored his first England goals after nineteen minutes and his second seven minutes into the second half.


51 1903-04

12 March 1904, 3-1 vs. Ireland, Cliftonville Gardens, Belfast
23 year-old Alf Common scored twice in his second appearance. Scoring one in each half, in the sixteenth minute, and twenty minutes into the second half.


52 1904-05

27 March 1905, 3-1 vs. Wales, Anfield Road, Liverpool
25 year-old Vivian Woodward scored his second brace on his seventh appearance. Scoring in 33 second half minutes, after 55 and 88 minutes.


53 1905-06

17 February 1906, 5-0 vs. Ireland, Solitude Ground, Belfast
22 year-old Dicky Bond scored his first England goals on his second appearance. Scoring the first of the rout after 26 minutes, and the fifth a minute from time.


54-62 1907-08

With the introduction of the end-of-season Continental Tour, this season produced nine different braces from four different players
15 February 1908, 3-1 vs. Ireland, Solitude Ground, Belfast
22 year-old George Hilsdon also scored his first England goals on his second appearance. Scoring the first of the three after seven minutes, and the third seven minutes from time.
(2) 16 March 1908, 7-1 vs. Wales, The Racecourse,
Wrexham
George Hilsdon next England goals came in the next match, another brace. Completed just after the hour after his first just before the end of the first half. Both goals came courtesy of Jock Rutherford, whose efforts on goal were parried away for Hilsdon to capitalise on.
28 year-old captain
Vivian Woodward scores three goals on his eleventh appearance, becoming the oldest to score a hat-trick so far. His first goal, off his head, came after 18 minutes, and his second ten minutes from the end. He completed his hat-trick five minutes later. The fourth captain to score a brace.
(2) 6 June 1908, 6-1 vs. Austria, Cricketer Platz, Wien
25 year-old
Jimmy Windridge scored a brace on his fourth appearance, in seventeen first minutes. His Chelsea teammate...
George Hilsdon scored his third brace on his fifth appearance, in thirteen second half minutes.
(2) 8 June 1908, 11-1 vs. Austria, Hohe Warte Stadion, Wien
now 29 year-old, captain Vivian Woodward scored his first goal on his fourteenth appearance after four minutes, and a second four minutes before the half time break. He will go on to score two more. The first captain to score a brace in two matches.
24 year-old debutant Frank Bradshaw scored his first England goal in the nineteenth minute, adding a second in the 72nd minute, before going on to complete his hat-trick on his only appearance.
10 June 1908, 7-0 vs. Hungary, Millenáris Sportpálya, Buda-pesth
George Hilsdon scores a fourth brace on his sixth appearance. Scoring his first in the 28th minute and a second three minutes into the second half. He then added a third, then a  fourth goal.
13 June 1908, 4-0 vs. Bohemia, Stadión Letná, Praha
George Hilsdon scores a fifth brace on his seventh appearance. Scoring his first in the 24th minute and his second five minutes into the second half, a penalty-kick, only England's second successful conversion.


63-71 1908-09

(2) 13 February 1909, 4-0 vs. Ireland, Horton Park Avenue, Bradford
For the first time, two braces are responsible entirely for England's scoreline, the first completed was from 29 year-old captain Vivian Woodward who had scored England's second goal on the hour and headed in another twenty minutes later, his fifth brace came from corners. The first captain to score a brace in three matches.

George Hilsdon had scored his first England goal ten minutes before Woodward on his eighth and final appearance. His second came from the spot three minutes from time, making him the leading penalty-kick goalscorer, and his sixth brace.
3 April 1909, 2-0 vs. Scotland, The Crystal Palace, Sydenham
25 year-old George Wall scored his first goals for England early, the first in the third, the second in the fifteenth. It is the second time that the brace has been responsible for the victory.
(3) 31 May 1909, 8-2 vs. Hungary, Millenáris Sportpálya, Buda-pesth
 Captain Vivian Woodward scored his sixth brace, starting with England's second after twelve minutes and completing his double after 36 minutes. He will go on to add a third and a fourth. The first captain to score a brace in four matches.
22 year-old Harold Fleming had scored England's first goal after four minutes before completing his double a minute before half time.
23 year-old George Holley had scored England's third goal after seventeen minutes and scored the final goal of the match a minute before the final whistle.
(3) 1 June 1909, 8-1 vs. Austria, Hohe Warte Stadion, Wien

Captain Vivian Woodward scores a record-equalling seventh brace. The first captain to score a brace in ffive matches.

13 March 1911, 3-0 vs. Wales, The Den, New Cross
31 year-old captain Vivian Woodward scores his record-breaking eighth brace on his 23rd and final appearance. He also becomes the oldest to score a double by eight days. Both goals were headers, in the 64th and 82nd minutes. He ends his goal tally on 28 goals. The first captain to score a brace in six matches.


73 1911-12

10 February 1912, 6-1 vs. Ireland, Dalymount Park, Dublin
24 year-old Harold Fleming scores his second England brace on his eighth appearance, scoring his first goal after twelve minutes, and completed his double five minutes before half-time, before going on to complete his hattrick.

10 April 1920, 5-4 vs. Scotland, Hillsborough, Sheffield
Ten years and two months since an England player scored more than once in a single match....26 year-old debutant Bob Kelly two goals came in the 57th and 73rd minutes.


75-79 1922-23

21 October 1922, 2-0 vs. Ireland, The Hawthorns, West Bromwich
25 year-old Harry Chambers two goals came in the 66th and 85th minutes. It is the third time that the brace has been responsible for the victory.
19 March 1923, 6-1 vs. Belgium, Arsenal Stadium, Highbury
22 year-old debutant Ken Hegan two goals came in the first half, 25 minutes apart, in the tenth and 35th minutes.
10 May 1923, 4-1 vs. France, Stade Pershing, Paris
Ken Hegan's second brace were England's first and final goals in this match, coming in the ninth and 84th minutes.
21 May 1923, 4-2 vs. Sweden, Olympiastadion, Stockholm
25 year-old Billy Walker was making his fifth appearance when he scored his double, and they were again England's first and final goals in this match, coming in the 22nd and 75h minutes.
24 May 1923, 3-1 vs. Sweden, Olympiastadion, Stockholm
28 year-old debutant Billy Moore two goals came in the 32nd and 78th minutes.


80 1923-24

17 May 1924, 3-1 vs. France, Stade Pershing, Paris
22 year-old debutant Vivian Gibbens scored his double in fifteen first half minutes, in the tenth and 25th.


81-83 1924-25

(2) 8 December 1924, 4-0 vs. Belgium, The Hawthorns, West Bromwich
For the second time, two braces are responsible entirely for England's scoreline, 23 year-old Joe Bradford scored his double in his second appearance, after seventeen minutes, and again after 61 minutes.
The afternoon did not start too well for the 27 year-old
Billy Walker, which began with him missing a penalty-kick, before scoring in the sixtieth and 66th minutes to complete is second double, on his ninth appearance.
28 February 1925, 2-1 vs. Wales, Vetch Field, Swansea
For a fourth time, the brace has been responsible for the victory, 31 year-old
Frank Roberts breaks the record by becoming the oldest to score a brace, by sixty days. It took him four minutes to register the double, starting in the seventh minute.


84 1925-26

24 May 1926, 5-3 vs. Belgium, Olympish Stadion, Antwerpen
It is highly probable that 29 year-old Frank Osborne is the fiftieth different to play to score at least two goals for England in a single match, and he did so on his fourth and final appearance. The first, after fifteen minutes, set England on their way, and he doubled his tally in the 78th minute before completing his hattrick eight minutes later.


85-92 1926-27

 Billy Dean scored his fifth brace in his first five appearances, and he did so by scoring in the 24th and 75th minutes. There was one other double scored this afternoon, either George Brown or Arthur Rigby were scoring their second braces. The fiftieth minute goal is what is causing confusion. The Sporting Life, L'Equipe 1984-85 and Rothman's favour Brown. The Guardian, L'Echo des Sports, Gamage's and Granidge's suggest Rigby. Brown had already scored in the fourth minute, and Rigby would score his legitimate goal in the 87th.

29 year-old Joe Carter scored his only brace, England's one hundredth, on his third and final appearance. In the fifteenth minute and again in the 73rd minute, a successful penalty kick. It is also only the second time where a brace is scored and a defeat is the result, first since 1880.
